How Elite Golfers Create a Wide-to-Narrow Hand Path in the Downswing

How Elite Golfers Create a Wide-to-Narrow Hand Path in the Downswing

Most golfers assume they should pull their hands down in transition—but that’s not what elite players do. Instead, the best ball strikers use a combination of rotational shifts and proper sequencing to create a wide-to-narrow hand path in the downswing. At Dennis Sales Golf Academy in Argyle, TX, we use GEARS Golf 3D motion capture to analyze these movements, helping golfers refine their mechanics for more consistency and power. Learn why pulling down is a mistake and how objective swing data can transform your game.

Refining Sequencing for Better Ball Striking: Dustin’s Progress at Dennis Sales Golf Academy in Argyle, TX

Golfers often find themselves battling old habits, especially when they step away from structured training. That’s exactly what happened with Dustin Neyra—his ball striking became inconsistent, and his ability to control ball flight suffered. When he came back for a session at Dennis Sales Golf Academy in Argyle, TX, the focus was on one key objective: rebuilding his sequencing from P5 to P6 to optimize his club path and improve his ball flight.

Identifying the Issue: Old Habits Resurfacing

Dustin had fallen back into a pattern where his sequencing was off during the downswing transition. The key issues included:

  • A hand path that wasn’t properly tracing its three-dimensional arc, affecting club delivery.

  • The center of mass of the club moving too far in front of the hands at P6.

  • An inefficient lower body move causing early hip thrust and reducing space for the club to shallow.

To fix these, we had to refine the movement pattern and sequencing from P4 (top of backswing) through P6 (shaft parallel in downswing).

The Key Adjustments: Creating Space & Improving Club Path

The corrections focused on a few core principles that are essential for any golfer struggling with ball-striking consistency:

1️⃣ Lower Body Mechanics: Setting the Wrench Before Turning It

A crucial part of the fix involved how Dustin used his right hip, leg, and foot in transition. Instead of firing the hip too early (which causes early extension), we focused on pulling back the right hip, leg, and foot before rotating. This created more space for the arms and club to move from the inside, preventing a steep downswing and improving overall consistency.

2️⃣ More “Down” Before “Out” in the Transition

From P4 to P5, we needed to emphasize a slightly more vertical movement (down) before shifting out. This ensured that the club’s center of mass moved behind his hands by P5.5, setting up a more efficient path through impact.

3️⃣ Better Hand Path and Center of Mass Relationship

We worked on ensuring Dustin’s hands traced the correct three-dimensional arc—moving back and up first, then transitioning down, out, and forward into impact. This allowed for a more neutral delivery of the club, preventing early casting or over-the-top motion.

The Result: More Predictable Ball Flight & Improved Ball Striking

By refining these movements, Dustin immediately saw improvement in his ball-striking consistency. The changes allowed him to:

Control his low point for better compression and turf interaction.
Improve club delivery with a more neutral path into impact.
Increase predictability of ball flight, eliminating erratic dispersion.

These types of adjustments are what separate good ball strikers from great ones. Small changes in sequencing can have a major impact on contact, trajectory, and consistency.
